Your Dog’s Diet
Dogs are basically meat eater, so if you are vegetarian and will not allow meat at home it is better not to keep a dog. Their teeth and body are designed to eat meat. Lack of meat could cause some deficiencies in your dog.
Dogs can eat anything from special diets to semi solids, and also completely dry foods. There are many canned foods which are easily available and are also healthy for your dog.
Most moist foods are available in cans. Dry feeds are very easy to give a dog. Sometimes, all you need to do is add a little water and soften it. If you have two dogs, make sure that you give each one his own individual bowl, as if they share a bowl you will not be able to tell if any one has eaten less food.
Certain special diet foods are available for certain dogs. Puppies and the more active dogs would require some special foods. Even though dogs love bones, there is always a danger of the dog swallowing the bone. Make sure that the bone is too large to prevent this.
If you are giving your dog canned preparations, any leftovers must be finished within twenty four hours. Dogs love biscuits which are in the shape of bones. They can be bitten and eaten, and are much safer than bones. Even though dog biscuits are very popular, they cannot substitute a complete meal.
Rice is an excellent form of nutrition for your dog. It can be given at any one meal time. You can even mix some frozen chicken pieces to it, which will give enough protein for the younger dogs.
Just as humans need a balanced diet, dogs also need good nutrition and food. Sometimes, wrong eating habits can cause obesity in dogs. You will then need to follow a low calorie diet and substitute it for their food. Improper diets can also lead to kidney and intestinal problems in your dog.
All this can add to more problems and therefore, even regular visits to the vet for older dogs will help the owner understand if there is a problem with his nutrition.
