utility-of-mouthwashFor oral hygiene, mouthwash is always recommended. The antiseptic agents used in the mouthwash is usually claimed to kill those bacteria, which are responsible for causing tooth decay, bad breath or any other dental problems. On the other hand, it has also been seen that many controversial reports regarding harmful effect of today’s commercial mouthwash is appearing every other day. In such a situation, we tend to get confused about what the next step should be.

Irrespective of controversies, the use of mouthwash is on increase, which is evident from the fact that thousands of mouthwash brands are available across the world. Until it’s a concrete proven fact that mouthwash is bad for health, no one cares to compromise with their oral hygiene. In today’s busy scheduled life, many prefer to use mouthwash, as it’s easy to use. However, here you should be aware of some facts.

Never start thinking that your mouthwash can replace the function or need of brushing and flossing. Not only you, give this lesson to your kids as well. I find mouthwash useful, when we use them after having food. Food particles stuck in teeth and gum can lead to tooth decay, so it is always better if we use mouthwash to remove them from mouth as soon as possible.

It is usually recommended to use about 20 ml of mouthwash to rinse the mouth. Many prefer to use mouthwash just after brushing their teeth. However, dentists advise not rinse your mouth immediately after brushing teeth. At least an hour of gap should be there between brushing and rinsing, as the ingredient of SLS in toothpaste could deactivate the cationic agents present in most of mouthwashes.

If one has the problem of bad breath then, he/she should avoid buying that mouthwash, which contains a significant percentage of alcohol in it. The alcohol content can trigger the problem of bad breath
