Achilles tendonitis occurring due to irritated and inflamed Achilles tendon may turn into Achilles tendinosis-a degenerative condition with the loss of the organized structure of tendon. Achilles tendonitis further weakens the tendon besides making it more fibrous.
Continued and repeated strain and pressure on Achilles tendon may lead to rupture which may eventually necessitate surgical treatment for correction of the damage.
If you did not get relief from rest, application of ice, pain relievers available over and other self-care measures for inflamed and irritated tendon you must see a doctor for medical treatment.
In accordance with the severity of your condition your doctor may recommend use of an orthotic device for elevation of your heel within your shoe so as to relieve and ease the stress and strain on the stretched tendon.
Your doctor may also feel the need for prescribing special heel pads or cups for your shoes so that they can provide support to your heel besides ensuring proper flexibility. You may also be advised to put on splint at night for stretching of your Achilles tendon especially when you go for a sleep.
If you are severely affected by Achilles tendon your doctor may advise you to use a walking boot. You may also be advised to use crutches so that your tendon can get adequate support for healing.
You can try aspirin, ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to get relief from pain and inflammation. Advil and Motrin come under category of such drugs.
Tylenol and other products that contain acetaminophen can also be useful in reducing the discomfort caused by Achilles tendonitis.
Avoid frequently taking such drugs as they may cause stomach ache, bleeding and even ulcers. Rather take these drugs on consultation with your doctor.
The tendon mostly heals and recovers on its own over a period of time after physical therapy, exercise program and other surgical or non surgical treatment options.
However, it such treatment options fail to bring desired results, you will be left with a last resort i.e. surgery for removal of inflamed tissue from around the tendon.
If tendon remains untreated it may keep sustaining small tears through activities and exercises and finally get become ruptured due to too much of stress.
