By on July 9, 2010

If you are a woman and have decided to travel and tour independently without any companion then at first this might seem a little scary and nerve wrecking. The good news though is that you are not the only one who ahs ever decided to travel alone.

Every year thousands of women end up traveling across the globe alone and are able to do this by following a few basic tips and adhering to some self laid rules.

It is easy to identify a tourist. Most of us can and do so while we go about our usual day to day business. Since it is so easy for you to identify a tourist who is visiting your area remember it is easy for others to recognize you as a tourist when you are visiting that part of the world.

Being prepared to deal with people walking up to you and trying to sell you something or convincing you to visit a certain place is something that you should train yourself to do. It is also essential that you practice the art of mingling into the crowd in order to avoid drawing to much attention to yourself.

Your first order of business as you endeavor on your trip is to purchase a guide book which has been compiled keeping the single traveler in mind. A visit to your nearby bookstore would ensure that you get your hands on a good guide.

Try to make sure that the guide you purchase is a recent edition and not to old. The more recent it is the more relevant is the information contained within it. These kinds of books are filled with information that deals with accommodation, places to hang out and restaurants to visit especially targeted at the independent traveler.

Some would also have reference websites listed in them which feature other independent travelers who you can hook up with to share a meal, shop together or even maybe travel together if you are looking for some company.

While traveling alone you might feel the urge to just take things as they come. Though this is not a bad idea it is advisable to ensure that you have at least your first days accommodation booked well in advance.

This would ensure that when your flight gets in you don’t have to worry about anything and can get some rest before you begin your wanderings. Though renting a room for a night might be expensive and could well cost you a little more than what you had planned it is a good investment especially when you are an independent women traveler.

If you are being bothered by someone then remember to focus and stay smart. Avoid speaking with a person making advances towards you and at all costs avoid direct eye contact with such kind of people. Ignoring such a person and moving away quickly should be the first thing that you do.

In case you are being followed or harassed then move into a store or hotel or any inform them that you are a tourist and are being annoyed by that person. Ask them to help you by calling the police or asking the person to stop bothering you.

You may be surprised to learn how effective this method of dealing with pests is. Do not accept food, snacks or anything to drink from strangers.

While traveling ensure that you are dressed appropriately. Dressing conservatively helps to avoid unnecessary attention. Observe how the local women dress and if possible adapt quickly to their style.
