Tips for First Time Ice Skaters
Ice skating is one of the best sports that an individual can indulge in. It is graceful, yet energizing! The sport takes lots of practice as it requires good balance and the technique must be mastered. Usually, people are a little vary of the sport as they fear slipping and falling on the ice. Nevertheless, there are lots of tips and guide points for beginners that will help them learn the sport.
This is a great sport for adults and children alike. However, it is an expensive way to keep fit (as both the skates and rink memberships are heavy on the pocket). Hence, it is not a sport for the masses, but a luxury lifestyle sport!
Similar to Roller-blades
Those who can balance on roller blades learn fast as the basic form of the skates is the same. Instead of the rollers in a single line, there is a broad blade. People who have skated on regular roller skates (2×2 wheel system), can also quickly learn to balance on ice skates.
Special Skates
Special skates are required for ice skaters and most ice skating rinks lend these out as they are costly. It is a good idea for beginners to hire the skates initially; and once they have acquired proper balance and have learned the basic techniques of the sport, they can purchase their personal skates.
Appropriate Clothing
All ice skaters must wear comfortable clothing comprising of long track pants, tights or jeans. Though the attire should be snug, it should not be too tight so that it is easy to bend while skating. Long sleeved t-shirts and jackets are also advisable as it tends to get cold in the rink. All beginners are bound to fall and their clothes will get wet on the ice, so, it is suggested that a change of clothes is carried along. Also, please ensure that the socks worn inside the skates are long, so that the insides of the skates do not create any blisters. Gloves are mandatory as a fall on the ice will hurt the hands.
Children Specials
Most ice skating rinks provide ‘frames’ that are akin to walking frames that help children glide along and they do not fall. Children attempting ice skating must use these frames to help them glide.
