In days of recession, job cuts and control in overhead costs, many organizations allow their employees to work out of home. This option reduces the overhead costs of the organization in terms of floor space (workstations) and variable costs of electricity and equipment.
Additionally, the system of SOHO (small office home office) is becoming popular worldwide as many people are opting for freelance assignments or are venturing out on their own (by starting their own businesses).
In order to work effectively from home and have a self-sufficient SOHO, various forms of technology need to be used to stay connected with the outside world and the organizations.
Computer Systems
The very basic equipment required for any kind of professional work is a good computer system . Even if you have to only write letters, handwritten ones are considered too casual. The choice between a desktop or laptop would depend upon the nature of work you are doing. If your work involves travelling, then a laptop is a better idea as your work goes with you. However, projects that require graphics, designing or architectural plans may be better done on a desktop as that allows a wider (and larger) screen.
Software
Depending upon the nature of the project, specialized software must be installed on your computer system. Apart from that, the current version of Windows is essential for regular office administrative work.
Telephone Systems
Staying in touch with others is of utmost importance. A good telephone instrument is mandatory as often teleconferencing is required among two or more people. Ideally, your SOHO should have a telephone number separate from your residence number for complete privacy and non-encroachment of the phone by family members. A mobile phone (or a blackberry) is also essential, especially when you are travelling.
Fax Machine or Scanner
Though fax machines are outdated, they are often used by SOHOs. Alternatively, a scanner can be used for sending copies of documents across to business associates.
Web Camera
Effective communication is possible when the people communicating can see each other. A high quality web camera is extremely useful for this purpose.
High Speed Internet
Whatever be the internet connection you have opted for (wireless or cable), it must be high speed as this will allow uninterrupted video conferencing. If you work only at your desk, then a wireless connection is not really required.
