Selection Of Books/Stories To Enhance A Toddlers Vocabulary
As a child grows, he/she learns new words each day and most of these are picked up through conversations with parents and friends. However, a variety of books and stories can be used to teach a child new words and improve his/her language skills.
Poems and Rhymes
There is a huge variety of poems and rhymes. Some of them are mythological while others may pertain to daily life and chores. The repetitive nature of rhyming words makes it interesting for the child and easy to remember. Different types of poems should be taught to a child – poems/ rhymes about flowers, friends, parents, family, school, alphabet, etc. Through this selection, the child will learn about a whole gamut of things.
Fairy Tales
Fairy tales are loved by all children, though some may prefer a specific type. Though these tales are enchanting, most of them have an evil element in the form of witches and giants. This helps in teaching the child about good people and bad people and to differentiate between the good and bad.
Childhood Stories
Children love hearing stories and anecdotes of when their parents were children. These stories help create a bond between the parent and child and to demonstrate that all parents did things similar to what the children do.
Moral Stories
The best way to teach a child how to behave is to tell them moral stories. Children will respond better to a story that to be told about good behaviour directly. Visual representation and verbal story-telling combine to make a lasting impression in a child’s mind.
Encyclopaedias
Parents often feel that encyclopaedias are meant to be reference books for older children. This is not so as these books are very effective in introducing a variety of things to a child. Family encyclopaedias are ideal and they touch upon various topics briefly – just enough to introduce the concept to the child.
