Relaxation Options
All of us need to relax- especially after the daily rigours of life and work. Lounging around the house and watching TV are ways to unwind, but these do not really relax our body muscles. A little something special is needed at times and is always welcome to help in relaxation.
Water
H2O (water) is extremely therapeutic. A hot shower or a soak in a hot tub eases out the tension and relaxes the body. A few drops of aroma oils in the bath helps soothe frazzled nerves. Depending upon the weather, and in warm climates, a cool splash in the pool or a cold shower refreshes the body. Whichever way water is used, it helps as an effective relaxing tool, and is easily done at home or at the pool. Other water-oriented relaxation tools like Jacuzzi or steam can also be used to calm the body.
Tensed muscles and tired bodies are apt for massage. When the body cries out in pain due to exertion and stress, there is nothing better than a massage of all tension points in the body. Depending upon personal inhibitions, a full body massage or a selective massage (like foot reflexology or a head massage) can be opted for.
Heat Treatment
Application of heat on sore points in the body effectively relives the pain. Hot oil treatment is often done in aroma therapy or natural treatments like ayurveda. The sore points are massaged with hot oil that loosens up the ‘tension knots’ in the body. These knots form on the shoulders and back. Though this treatment requires a masseur, other forms of heat application can be done at home. A heating pad can be effectively used for areas such as the back and shoulders. However, this kind of heat should be applied for short durations and usually not longer than 20-30 minutes. At the same time, the heat levels should not be too high (so as to burn) and should remain at a comfortable point. Also, the heating pad should never be placed directly on the skin.
