Guests coming in to your house cannot help praising you for your novel bathroom décor idea. Not only this, careful selection of bathroom plants also decorate your bathroom and freshen up the atmosphere too.

Selecting plants for bathrooms

You have to be very careful while selecting a bathroom plant. Consider the atmosphere that is persistent in the bathroom. A general bathroom condition is humid to a great extent, slightly warmer than the rest of the house and also does not require much of direct sunlight.

Plants thriving in indirect sunlight find themselves in a bathroom condition. Again, those performing well in high humidity are ideal for the environment.

Since the requirement of light is very crucial in choosing plants for the bathroom, so choice of plants must be according to that. A bathroom that is highly lighted by ambient light will be the best home for those requiring high light exposures. Similarly, the ones that perform well in low-light conditions will require one that loves indirect sunlight or low intensity lighting.

Thus the plants that are best suited for a bathroom environment are as follows.

Snake plant

Considered as one of the hardiest houseplants this can survive in almost any sort of atmosphere, be it dry or humid. Just one thing that needs to be taken care of is that if the soil is humid, do not water it at all because it is prone to root rot. Over watering is a menace for snake plant.

Identifying snake plant is very simple. The basic feature of snake plant is that it has sword-like, tough and rough leaves, pointed at the top. Each of the roots shoot out like a snake’s hood, thus the significance of the name is well understood.

There are basically two types of distinguishingly different snake plants. One variety has green leaves with adjacent strokes and shades in yet deeper shades. The other variety of the plant has dark green leaves that are bordered in yellow color.

Repotting is something totally useless for the plant as it is basically root bound. So once you plan to keep it in your bathroom, ensure you have made a final selection of the container. Most important is that the container has a good drainage system.

Best is to keep the plant in the window inside your bathroom that encourage sun’s rays to peep in. water only when the soil is bone dry and hard to touch, and you will be rewarded with green tender leaves sprouting out in no time.

Money plant

This typical vine-plant is well known as an indoor variety of plant. The maintenance level is also very nominal. It is characterized by heart shaped leaves that are as small as within 20 cms length when young. When mature and fully grown, these leaves grow as wide and long as 45 cms. The money plant climbs on to firm support with by producing long tendrils. Thus, if you plan to keep this plant inside your bathroom, make sure you allow it to climb.

Since it hates long spells of direct sunlight and is happy in a condition that offers medium to light sun, so bathroom can, very well be its ideal destination.

It does not need frequent repotting. Once in every couple of years is alright for it if you really wish to do that.  Watering is also recommended when the soil gets hard to touch. The most amazing part of this money plant is that it has been chosen as an easy to grow plant that can grow in the principle of “hydroponics”; that is growing it in water, devoid of any soil.
Prayer plant

Another very popular house plant that demands as minimal care as possible is a prayer plant. It has a variety of colors and subsequent name, but the basic visual appearance remains the same, characterizing with dark green leaves that have vines that are of different colors and run through the leaves.

These vines are either red, pinkish, off white, white or similar colors which make the leaves beautiful to look at.  The leaves are either a bit elongated or a bit roundish to look with the predominance of reddish tones in some of them, according to the category. It owes its name “prayer plant” as it folds during the night time, in a gesture of praying.

The sunlight requirement of this plant is moderate to low, and obviously of an indirect nature. If kept under direct harsh sun, the leaves tend to curl up and become brownish, which eventually kills the plant even. It adjusts itself with the atmosphere of the bathroom and inside rooms.

But if you see that the leaves remain folded in the morning too, then it indicates that the plant is not getting enough sunlight. If you see the colors of the leaves have started fading, be alert. It is a sign that they are getting more than the required amount of sunlight.

What factor makes it more ideal for bathroom atmosphere is its high humidity level, which is a basic nature of most of the bathrooms. Regular misting makes it flourish further.

The water requirement, though, necessarily mean that the plant prefers a moist soil, but not at all a soggy one. So water it only when you feel the soil is damp, not wet. It does not like fluctuations of temperature. A uniformly warm climate is what it looks for.

Dieffenbachia

The very common plant characterized by large leaves with yellow or white strokes and stripes on them, dieffenbachia is also a good bathroom plant option. This plant can be kept both indoors and outdoors. But the ideal climatic condition of it is a light, indirect sunlight, moisture in the soil and moderate to high temperature. Thus it rightly suits the ambience of a general bathroom.

Watering is moderate to low, only when the soil is hard to touch. Over watering, under watering, both are detrimental for the plant.
