Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Conjunctivitis, popularly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of conjunctiva, which covers the white part of the eye and the inner potion of the eyelid, causing irritation, itching, redness, discharge and pain. Though it spreads rapidly, but does no harm to the eyesight or damage the eye. Mostly pink eyes go away on their own; but some kind of pink eyes requires treatment.
Causes
The bacteria and viruses that cause cold and other infections like throat and ear infection and sinus infection are the causes for pink eye. Allergies from grass, pollen, dust etc. can also cause conjunctivitis. Chemicals and pollutants present in the atmosphere can also be the cause behind pinkeye.
Symptoms
A person feels extreme discomfort and irritation in eyes as if there is sand or some dust particle in the eye. Eyes look red and person feels itchy. Though symptoms may vary from person to person, but mostly some discharge makes the eyelid sticky and difficult to open in the morning. Sometimes eyelids are swollen and become sensitive to bright light.
Treatment
Most of the time pink eye goes away on its own. To give some relief from this bacterial infection, doctors prescribe antibiotic eye drop or ointment. If some one especially your kids don’t take drop in their eyes, then use ointment instead of eye drop. The ointment can be applied where the eye lid meets in a thin layer. For allergic conjunctivitis, doctors prescribe anti allergic medication in the form of drops, ointment or pills. Use cotton balls and warm water to clean the dried discharge time to time so that patient feels comfortable and is able to open the eyes.
Since pink eye is contagious, maintaining hygiene is essential. Every time you touch the effected area, you must wash your hands properly. Use separate towels and wear glasses to avoid spreading the disease.
Assuming red, swollen eyes as pink eye every time is not good. You must seek medical help if:
• There is excessive green and yellow discharge from your eyes
• If you are having high fever and you are shivering and unable to see
• If you feel severe pain while coming in contact with light
• If redness does not reduce till two weeks
• If you experience burning sensation during urination
Do not share eye drops, pillows etc. with the infected person.
