Our Daily Addiction
We develop certain habits in our daily life, and without realizing they often turn into addiction. Though these addictions are not as fatal as alcohol or drugs, still they can cause a lot of harm to our health and create problem for us in the long run.
Painkillers
Many of us keep painkillers handy. Whenever we suffer from headache or body pain, we just pop a pain killer. We are not aware that this is nothing but addiction. We become addicted because pain killers like Disprin and Ibuprofen, due to their composition gives us instant relief.
Various studies have proved that pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if taken regularly can develop the risk of high blood pressure. Regular intake of these pain killers can cause stomach pain, ulcers and internal bleeding. Long term use of these painkillers can cause gastrointestinal problems. Many people, who are addicted to pain killers and always want quick relief, do not know that pain killers can destroy our body’s natural defense system against illness.
Aerated Drinks
Our youth and children are so much addicted to soft drinks specially colas and lemon drinks that their meals are incomplete without these aerated drinks. They hardly know that there are serious health issues connected with regular consumption of these soft drinks. There are plenty of evidence that prove that regular consumption of soft drink leads to bone fracture and long term risk of osteoporosis on women. Obesity, diabetes, risk of developing kidney stones, indigestion and tooth decay are also some of the outcomes. Our children are increasingly getting addicted to it. So many agencies have recommended that these aerated drinks should not be available in schools.
Chewing Gum
Many people chew gums for freshness of breath, for taste pleasure or to keep themselves away from smoking cigarette. But they hardly realize that it can become addiction and leave them with serious health problems.
According to nutrition therapists, chewing stimulates salivary glands and produces digestive enzymes. Excessive chewing can lead to the over work of pancreas and deficit of pancreatic enzymes, resulting in incomplete digestion. And we know that incomplete digestion leads to a number of illnesses. Too much chewing hurts the jaw muscles as well.
Tea and Coffee
All of us drink quite an abundant number of cups of tea and coffee to energize ourselves throughout the day. But we are unaware of the fact that caffeine dehydrates the body and we lose essential minerals. So it is better to reduce its consumption and switch to herbal tea.
