Making A Wedding Speech
Not too many people are lucky to be asked to make a wedding speech. If you have been given a chance, it is either because you have great oratory skills, or because you have a special place in the couple’s life.
No matter what the case, you must pay some time and attention to make a speech which will be memorable.
Spare a thought for why you have been asked to make the speech. You can weave this into the speech when you make it. Never say, however, that you have no idea why you were asked or that you are not the right person to be making the speech.
Do a little research on the place of the wedding, on the bride and the groom. You can mention that this is the same place the parents were married, or that the girl has chosen it for a special purpose. It can be nice to add in a little joke, but make sure it is very general, and does not hurt anyone’s sentiments.
This is a very special, happy day for everyone. Do not talk about sad incidents or things, and avoid any topics which can hurt anyone present. Do not make any references to any religion or sect, or make any racist comments.
It is very important to edit what you have written. It is even better to run your speech by either the bride or the groom to get their approval before hand. This will make sure that both you and they are at ease when you speak.
Do not read your speech out.
This is an informal event and you are not here for any promotion. Say your speech naturally and be as comfortable as you can. Do not rush, or stammer too much through your speech.
Although you are lucky to be asked to make a speech, this is clearly the couple’s day. Do not get your speech to last for more than ten minutes at all. About five minutes is the best time for the speech. You could end it with a witty quote or a little story to create more of an impact.
