    Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms

    Magnesium (Mg) is an important nutrient which along with some other nutrients and calcium works towards providing your body with a proper mental and physical health.

    Magnesium helps in the contraction and relaxation of the muscles and the production of protein by your body. It also assists in the functions that are performed by the enzymes in your body.

    Magnesium also plays an important role in the production and transportation of energy throughout the body. It helps in keeping your bones strong and looking after the health of your immune system.

    A deficiency in magnesium may be triggered to several medical conditions like burns, surgery, low levels of calcium etc which would make difficult for your body to absorb magnesium. Alcoholism, diarrhea, ill managed diabetes, bartter’s symptom or gitelman’s syndrome etc can also cause deficiency of magnesium.

    Magnesium is found in green leafy vegetables, dry fruits, peas, soy products, legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. A blood test can help determine whether you are suffering from a deficiency in magnesium or not. Hence, it is essential to consult your doctor if any of the below stated symptom identifies with your.

    A person suffering from a deficiency of in magnesium would often suffer from aches and pains. He/she may also experience cramps in his/her foot at all times. Magnesium deficiency symptom may enfold a stiff feeling in the neck, tight feeling in the chest, frequent headaches, pain in the jaw etc. Initially the deficiency could lead to anorexia, confusion, fatigue, twitching of muscles, poor memory, insomnia, irritation, apathy or even a reduced ability to learn.

    If the deficiency is not corrected, it could lead to certain changes in the cardiovascular system which may also increase the rate of your heartbeat. In extreme cases you may even experience hallucinations, frequent contractions of the muscles, delirium etc.

    When the deficiency in magnesium is combined with a deficiency of calcium, you could face a lot of problems in the central nervous system of your body. Panic attacks, anxiety, extreme irritation, restlessness may be quite common at such times. Over time, these may lead to agoraphobia and insomnia. You may even experience a tingling sensation, numbness etc in case if the peripheral nervous system is affected due to the deficiency.
