Keeping Children Safe At Home – Preventing Poisoning At Home
Children are always curious and put everything in their mouth out of curiosity. Every parent should take some precaution and guard their children against becoming a victim of poisoning.
• To avoid any mishappenings, keep all the medicines and chemicals out of the reach of children; if possible keep them under lock and key. Usually parents keep these medicines and poisonous things in high shelves and become satisfied that they have kept them beyond their reach. But parent do not know that their children can surprise them and climb the height they do not even expect.
• All medicine and harmful chemicals should be kept in their original containers especially with their original label intact. Completely avoid the practice of storing them in any drink or food container. Major accidents of poisoning takes place all over the world due to this type of irresponsible practice.
• Develop a habit of placing chemicals and medicine to their original storage place, just after use. Carelessness on your part can invite miss happenings. Most of the childhood poisoning accidents happen when these things are carelessly left out after use.
• Never keep medicines or chemicals in kitchen shelf, along with other food items.
• Take special care while you dispose off old medicines or chemicals which are no longer in use. Don’t keep them in dustbins. Children accidentally can come in contact with them. Contact your regional center to dispose them safely.
• Parents usually keep those medicines within the reach of the children, which have child resistant caps. But remember Child resistant caps are not always child proof.
• Always purchase smaller packaging size; so that even if the child swallows them accidentally, they have reduced effect.
• Never offer any medicines as sweet or lollies to your children when they are sick.
• Dishwasher powder, detergent and phenyl should be kept out of reach of children to avoid poisoning. Never leave children in bathroom or kitchen unsupervised. Lock the cabinets where hazardous materials are stored.
