How To Reduce the Production of Sebum
Our body secretes natural oil termed as sebum. This oil helps maintain the ph balance of the skin by natural moisturization. However, over production of sebum becomes a cause of concern as our skin breaks out and acne forms. There are no known methods of eliminating sebum from the body but production of sebum can be controlled with proper skin care and by following healthy diet.
If you have oily skin or if you suffer from acne then use only natural products for your skin. Clean your face with a cleanser made from natural ingredients. Do not use harsh chemicals based products as these will remove natural moisture of your skin, thus further increase the production of sebum. Products that contain jojoba oil and coconut oil are very good for the skin as they are gentle much like the skin’s natural oils. Also they moisturize the skin without blocking the pores.
Use creams that contain natural ingredients to moisturize your skin. This way you can avoid clogging of skin pores that result in breaking out of the skin Use creams and lotions that are best suited to your skin type.
Regular exfoliation also helps get rid of sebum. Dead skin cells accumulating on the skin’s surface result in blackheads and whiteheads. These if left untreated attract acne causing bacteria. Sebum is the main food that these bacteria thrive on. If you exfoliate every alternate day you can get rid of the dead skins cells as well as avoid formation of blackheads. However, if you have sensitive skin then exfoliate only once a week.
Do not eat oily and spicy foods as these cause your body to produce excess sebum. Maintain a healthy diet by avoiding foods that have saturated fat. These make the skin oily and acne prone. Sometimes even dairy products are known to cause acne as the milk products contain animal hormones. Zinc is a very good mineral for controlling the production of sebum in humans. Eat foods that are high in zinc content.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly to keep the stress levels down. Sometimes stress also plays an important role in causing our body to produce extra sebum.
