How To Prepare Your Kid For Boarding School
Parenthood is a very crucial stage in the life of a couple. They have to remain conscious every time, about the health of their kid, what food the kid needs to be given to provide the essential nutrients, what vaccinations are to be provided, have you missed out any important vaccination, does the child require any medical check up, etc.
Tensions and anxiety shoots up as kid crosses its toddler stage and reaches the growing up stage. This is a turning point in the life of the child as well as his or her parents too. Now, together with the health issues of the child, the other things that add up to the consciousness are the kid’s educational life.
Schooling is a landmark in his or her life that determined the future of the child a lot, besides all other things. Now, the arena of the parents’ concern expands and issues like which playschool will be right for the kid, which playschool offers a greater exposure and chance for admission to a good school in the future, what school will be proper for him or her, which school has a better teaching and developmental prospects etc.
Since, school related matters capture most of the thought process of the parents during the growing up years of their children, so differences are there regarding the mode of schooling to opt for their children. While some parents aim at keeping their children with them and sending them to day schools, others prefer to send their children to boarding schools or residential schools.
Benefits of boarding school for children
Parents, who are supportive of the fact that, children develop more healthily when they are in boarding school, put forward certain benefits of this arrangement, which is not at all deniable. The phase of schooling is very considered very decisive in the way that a good school imparts discipline and works towards character building.
Some parents feel that a kid going to a day school will not get the exact ambient that id needed for character building during this age. A few hours of schooling cannot provide the step by step discipline, which needs to be reflected in the child’s schooling, reading, exercising and playing regime. On the other hand a residential school is equipped with such an atmosphere that provides the overall development of the kid.
A boarding school also helps the kid to develop individualism and become self sufficient. A child at a day school will get over attention from his or her parents and other family members. Hence, his or her manner of developing and becoming self sufficient gets hampered. But, in a boarding school when a child is alienated from parents, self sufficiency and own decision making and handling of emergency situations is achieved.
Parents who are employed in residential jobs do not have a choice but to take their children and family along with them. Every time they get transferred to a new place the blow is on the kid. He or she has to get an immediate transfer to a new school. The kid’s whole regime of studies get disturbed in this way, right from the teaching and learning style to the friend’s circle and teachers’ association.
This often results in the child’s lack of concentration, incapability to cope up with the ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ of the new school and gives rise to several psychological problems as well. These problems are not there if a child is admitted to a residential school as the child remains unaffected no matter how often the parents get transferred.
How to prepare the child for boarding school
Most of the children are not at all prepared to stay away from their parents and live in a boarding school. They get traumatized whenever they think of this seclusion from their parents. So, while deciding to send your child to a boarding school, certain things are to be followed.
Include your child in the decision
When you plan to send your kid to a boarding school for the betterment of his study career, include him or her too in your discussion. Do not be secretive about your plans for the boarding school and hide the matter from your child.
That way the kid will feel that you are alienating him or her from you and the child will be deprived from your love and attention. Explain to the kid clearly why you have taken such a decision and in case you feel, insist the child to take an active part in your decision too by expressing his or her view.
Make the child meet another one who is a hostelier
It will be a wise idea if you could arrange a meeting and interaction of your child with a kid who is already admitted to a residential school. The kid’s presence will act more strongly than your verbal explanation of the beneficial aspects of your child’s boarding school experience.
It will be best if you could arrange such a communication with a student of the same boarding school your child is being sent. That way, when your kid stats to live in the school, he or she will not feel totally along and will have a friend to intermingle with.
Try to make your child self sufficient
The major change that your child will be facing in a residential school is that he or she will be supposed to everything by ownself. Tight from picking up the meal plate, to arranging the required books for that days’ class to polishing and cleaning shoes, everything needs to be handled by the child in a boarding school.
Thus train the kid beforehand, by smaller steps at self sufficiency, so that he or she is not met with a totally different situation as soon as he or she steps in the boarding school.
Include the kid in the arrangements
While buying all the necessary things the kid would need during his or her stay at the hostel, take your kid along with you. This will be an attempt of making your child feel that nothing very bad or very unfortunate is going to happen.
Rather, an exciting this is about to occur, when the child will be his o her own guardian to some extent. He o she will be ale to enjoy ‘grown up’ situation to some extent. This is something they always like. In the process also ask your kid about what he or she might need at the hostel which you might have missed out.
