How To Make Vegetarian Steamed Momos With Tomato Sauce At Home?

vegetarian-steamed-momosMomo is a Tibetan and Nepali dish. They are dumplings with vegetable fillings or minced meat. They are usually served with spicy tomato sauce. Here’s the recipe to make vegetable momos with tomato sauce at home.

There are 7 steps in making momos:

1)      preparing the dough

2)      preparing filling

3)      preparing sauce

4)      preparing wrappers

5)      assembling momos

6)      cooking momos

7)      serving momos

PREPARING DOUGH

Ingredients :

50 grams flour

Water

Procedure :

Take flour in a large bowl and pour half cup water in it.

Mix flour and water by hand and keep water till you obtain a sticky ball of dough that doesn’t cling to your hand.

Knead the dough to make it smooth and flexible.

PREPARING FILLING

Ingredients :

Chopped cabbage- 1ib

Mushrooms-1/4ib

Chopped onions-1cup

Minced garlic-1tsp

Minced ginger- 1tsp

Cumin powder-1tsp

Coriander powder-1tsp

Ground black pepper-1/2tsp

Cilantro-1/2cup

Turmeric-1/4tsp

Cinnamon-1/4 tsp

Minced fresh red chilies-3 pieces

Salt to your taste

Procedure to make filling:

Mix together the ingredients in a bowl with hand.

Refrigerate the mixture till it gets ready to use.

PREPARING SAUCE:

Ingredients:

Tomatoes-3

Capsicum-1

Green chilies-3

Chopped cilantro-1 cup

Minced garlic-1tsp

Minced ginger-1tsp

Cumin powder-1tsp

Coriander powder-1tsp

Ground black pepper-1/2tsp

Salt to your taste

Procedure:

Roast tomatoes, capsicum and chilies in a pan without covering the pan.

Blend all the ingredients till you obtain a smooth paste.

Refrigerate the sauce.

PREPARING WRAPPERS

Make small balls of dough. Flatten these dough balls with a rolling pin. While making the wrappers, be cautious not make very thick or thin wrappers and the size should not be too small or big.

ASSEMBLING MOMOS:

Keep the wrapper in your left palm and put 1 tablespoon filling in it’s center.

Fold the wrapper in half, covering over the filling. You will obtain a half-circle wrapper with filling in it.

To close the wrapper, pinch the edges of the half-circle wrapper.

Repeat the same procedure with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Uncooked momos are ready now.

COOKING MOMOS:

Boil water in a large pot.

Grease well the steamer basket with vegetable oil so that momos don’t stick to each other.

Place the momos in the steamer basket.

Steam the momos for 10 minutes.

SERVING MOMOS:

Serve the momos hot with tomato sauce. You can either pour the sauce over momos or serve in a separate bowl to dip the momos.
