How to Explore Venetian Islands
There are many cities which together make the Venetian Islands.
Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The city is located in the North-eastern part of Italy. It comprises of 118 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon on the Adriatic Sea. It is also called as the “Queen of Adriatic”.
Though Venice is called the City of bridges too, yet all islands are not interconnected by bridges. Some are connected by water bodies only; and one can reach there by boats within 6-45 minutes depending upon the distance. San Michele, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido are the most visited islands of Venice.
Murano can be called as the Glass city. Murano glassmakers had been famous for their art for centuries. There was a time when only the people of Murano knew the art of making glass mirrors in Europe. They developed the technology to make crystal glass, milk glass, enameled glass etc. Murano is worth visiting for those who love glass art. There they can find a large variety of glass items ranging from paper-weights to glass jewelry, from glass lamp shades to glass chandeliers and many more souvenirs.
San Michele is a public cemetery. It is neatly divided into many sections. There are signs indicating orthodox cemetery and Protestant cemetery. There are two churches on this island- San Michele and San Cristoforo. The interior of San Michele Church is admired by visitors.
Burano is known as Lace-making Island. It has a lace museum named Museo Del Merletto. This Island is well known for bright colors. There is a custom in Burano to paint the houses with bright colors. The main occupations in Burano are fishing and lace-making.
Torcello was, once upon a time, the most populated island of Venice. Silt got deposited in the mainland and malaria spread in the island. Hence, people migrated from that island. Bell Tower, church of Santa Fosca and Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta attract tourists to this island.
Lido is residential area and shopping centre. Though sightseeing is not too much on this island, tourists enjoy walking along the beach and enjoy watching slow moving traffic.
