How To Avoid Dehydration
Water is vital for our body’s good health. Dehydration is a condition where a person loses more fluid than they take in. When a person gets dehydrated, it means that the amount of water in his or her body is lesser than the body needs to function properly. More then half of our body is composed of water.
Dehydration can be caused due to the following reasons:
• Due to consumption of inadequate amount of water while doing physical activities like playing cricket, tennis, basket ball, running, cycling and the like.
• Due to loss of blood, diarrhea, shock, vomiting, burns, drinking of alcohol
• Due to infectious disease like cholera, yellow fever, gastroenteritis
• Due to malnutrition
• Due to fasting
The best way that we all know about avoiding dehydration is to drink plenty of water. The second step which is vital is to dress according to weather. You must not be sweating more than you need to. Wear light clothes in hot and humid summer weather.
If you are going out to play or to do some strenuous or physical work, drink 2 to 3 glasses of water beforehand. Be aware of the symptoms of dehydration which include: thirst, dizziness with increase in breathing and pulse rate, cracked lips and flashed skin, severe headache, dry sticky mouth, nausea, passing less or darken urine and fever.
Dehydration often causes stomach pain as well. Continuous vomiting and loose motion some times make the patient lose lots of fluids from the body. So to avoid dehydration:
• Drink at least 6-8 glass of water daily. Even if you aren’t feeling thirsty, drink fluids on schedule.
• If you are don’t feel like drinking or eating any thing, drink fluids like juice, lemon soda, and light soft drink by taking tiny sips through out the day.
• Don’t drink coffee, tea and other alcoholic drink as they can have dehydrating effect.
• While traveling by air, avoid drinking alcohol. Instead drink lots of water or fluids
• Try to carry clean drinking water while going out or traveling.
• If a person is having temperature more than 102 degree and severe stomach pain then doctors should be called immediately.
• Some times patient cannot even digest fruit juice in that case dilute them with water.
More the amount of water we loose through perspiration, more we should consume water to balance it and avoid dehydration. Since mechanism of our boy neither tolerates deficit or excess in total body water, kidneys will remove any excess water efficiently through urine.
