Homemade Dog Food
Dog food available in stores is full of preservatives which might not be good for your dog. Also the food that you prepare for your dog at home will be more nutritious and will not cost you much.
Dog food is easy to prepare. A mix of proteins, vitamins and carbohydrates is all that your dog needs. However, you need to check with your dog’s vet before making the switch from readymade food to home cooked food.
A dog requires a mixed diet. The food should contain 30 per cent vegetables, 30 per cent carbohydrates or starch and 40 per cent meat. This is a well-balanced diet for your dog.
You can cook a mixture of rice, carrot and minced turkey meat and serve it to your dog. You can substitute minced beef in place of turkey and brown rice for white rice if you want to make the food healthier.
Potatoes, pasta and oatmeal are rich in both carbohydrates and starch. Any of these can be used in rotation when preparing food for the dog.You can boil all the ingredients together till they become tender. Once the food is cooked properly strain the liquid but leave some in the pan. This will make the food juicy and easy for the dog to eat and digest.
Don’t feed hot food to the dog. Allow it to come down to room temperature. The leftovers can be put in the refrigerator. Don’t serve cold food to your dog. Heat it to room temperature or take it out from the fridge well before your dog’s meal time. The leftovers should not be used after three days of preparation.
If you want to use garlic and ginger for flavoring then cook them properly. Don’t feed raw spices to your dog. And don’t use too much of garlic as it is life threatening to dogs. Under no circumstances should you feed chocolates to your dog.
Initially mix homemade food with commercial dog food. This will make it easier for your dog to make the switch.The choice of giving your dog homemade food or commercially available dog food is entirely yours. Not only is homemade food tasty but is also healthier than dog food in cans.
