Home Remedies For Insomnia

Insomnia refers to lack of sleep or sleeplessness. Insomniacs often complain about their inability of closing the eyes and resting their mind. The disease has recently gained widespread reach and is especially prevalent in developed nations. Women suffer from it more than the men.

Since, sleep is an important part of life and it is necessary for the individual to sleep for a complete rest of the body, sleeplessness may lead to various other diseases. There are various reasons associated with insomnia. The most common reasons include psychoactive drugs or stimulants, hormone shifts, other problems of life such as fear, stress and anxiety or other mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia etc. However, with the help of some simple home remedies one can easily get rid of insomnia without having any side effects.

Using poppy seeds

Poppy seeds can be fruitfully used to treat insomnia. Extract the milk from the seeds and take this milk in an amount of 30 grams with sugar before going to sleep at night. This will help in sleeping without any discomfort.

Using Rauwolfia

Rauwolfia can be used as a wonderful remedy for insomnia due to its sedative properties. Take 0.25 to 0.5 grams of powdered root of Rauwolfia and mix it with cardamom for getting a pleasant scent. Take this before sleeping at night. It will help in having a sound sleep. For the individuals suffering from chronic insomnia, the dosage of 0.25 gram of the powdered root should be administered twice daily; in the morning and at night before sleeping.

Using nutmegs

Nutmegs can also be used as a home remedy for insomnia. Take four nutmegs and grind it into powder. This powder should be taken every night before going to sleep. It will enhance the quality of sleep and help the individuals suffering from insomnia to have a proper sleep.

Using honey

Honey can also be a helpful remedy for insomnia. It has a hypnotic action and it persuades the individuals suffering from insomnia to have a good sleep. Take two teaspoonful of honey and mix it with a cup of water. This drink can be drunk before going to sleep every night.

Using aniseed

Aniseed also acts as a wonderful home remedy for insomnia. Take a teaspoonful of aniseed in 400 ml of water and simmer the solution for 15-20 minutes. Then strain the solution and drink the liquid hot or warm. This medication should be administered at night before going to sleep.

Using banana

Banana can also be used as a superb home remedy for insomnia. Take a ripe banana and mash it into a bowl. Add some roasted cumin seeds with it and have this as a medication at night before going to sleep. It will induce a sound sleep and help getting rid of insomnia.

Using curd

Curd can also be used as a home remedy for insomnia. The individual suffering from insomnia should take enough curd in his diet before going to sleep. Curd should also be messaged on the head. Curd is a very good remedy as it is easier to prepare and use than most other remedies.

Using bottle gourd

Bottle gourd can also be used to prepare a home remedy for insomnia. Take bottle gourd and sesame oil in equal amounts and mix it very well. Apply this on the scalp and message it well. Alternately, take cooked leaves of bottle gourd and use it in foods to get relief from insomnia quickly.

Using Milk

Milk is another easily available home remedy for insomnia. A glass of warm milk should be taken with honey for getting good results in insomnia. Milk acts as a tranquilizer; thereby inducing a sound sleep.

Apart from the above mentioned remedies, care should also be taken to do enough exercises to get a proper sleep. Mild exercises such as jogging, walking and swimming are very good enhancer of quality of sleep. Moreover, there are various yoga asanas which may be utilized to get a proper sleep. These exercises and asanas help in keeping the balance of work and sleep; thereby helping insomnia patients overcome their problems.
