Home Remedies For Hiccups
Hiccups refer to a special spasmodic movement caused by the diaphragm. The name is derived from the sound of “hic” which is caused in the process. Scientifically it is called singulitis. It is believed to be harmless and it repeats several times in a minute.
The hic sound is produced due to abrupt rush of air into the lungs. It is medically known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter. Hiccups are resolved automatically without any intervention in a short period of time but there are many home remedies available to shorten the duration.
Using water
One of the easiest and most used methods for getting rid of hiccups is to use water. Water drunk in short intervals are believed to stop the hiccups.
Water may also be used as a gargle to stop the hiccups. For gargling add a pinch of salt to make the process more useful. It will also help keep other throat troubles away.
Using sugar
Sugar is also a useful remedy for hiccups. Take a teaspoonful of sugar and suck it slowly. It will help in diminishing the urge for hiccups. It provides immediate relief from hiccups.
Using yogurt
Yogurt can also be used as a home remedy for getting rid from hiccups. In a cup of plain yogurt add two teaspoonful of salt and mix the contents well. This mixture when eaten slowly provides immediate relief from hiccups.
Using cardamom powder
Cardamom can also be used as a remedy for hiccups. Take half teaspoonful of fresh cardamom powder and boil it in 2 cups of water. Sieve the solution and drink the warm water for getting immediate relief from hiccups.
Using Ice
Ice can also be fruitfully used to stop irritating hiccups. Take some pieces of ice and crush them. Now take a tablespoonful of this crushed ice and suck it slowly. It will provide relief from the hiccups.
Using Ginger
Another easily available home remedy for hiccups is ginger. Take small pieces of ginger and suck them slowly to get rid of hiccups. It is one of the most used methods for getting relief from hiccups.
Using mustard seeds and clarified butter
Add half teaspoonful each of mustard seeds with equal amount of clarified butter and swallow this mixture to get quick relief from hiccups. Care should be taken to use the pure clarified butter for obtaining good results.
Using pineapple juice
Drinking pineapple juice is perhaps the most used remedy for hiccups, but scientists believe that taking any other liquid will have the same effect. But drinking pineapple juice has its own advantages; the acid content of the juice will probably do the trick.
Using a brown paper bag
A brown paper bag may also be quite helpful while it comes to getting rid of hiccups. While having hiccups cover the face with a brown paper bag. It is believed that the carbon dioxide gathered in the bag stops the hiccups.
Using a cotton swab
Using cotton swabs is another useful process to stop hiccups. Rub the roof of the mouth with the cotton swab to get rid of hiccups. It will tickle a bit and probably that is why the hiccups vanish. Scientists believe that the process activates the glottis, which ultimately is the source of hiccups.
Using vinegar
Vinegar can also be used a sure shot remedy for hiccups. Drinking vinegar helps in diminishing hiccups quickly. While drinking, one has to swallow very hard and that probably acts as an effect which stimulates the glottis.

One of the most tried and tested and probably the easiest home remedy for hiccups is to stop breathing for a while. Although many doubt in its working, this is probably the most ancient technique to get rid of hiccups.
