Home Remedies For Food Poisoning
Food poisoning or food borne illness refers to the diseases that result due to consumption of contaminated food. There are mainly two types of poisoning; namely food infection and food intoxication.
The first refers to any disease that is caused by bacteria or other microbes and leads to infection while the latter refers to ingestion of toxins with food. Whatever the type, food poisoning can have drastic effects. The common symptoms of food poisoning are vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, gastroenteritis, fever, diarrhea, headache or fatigue.
These symptoms may arise a few hours of days after the ingestion of contaminated food. However, simple and effective home remedies are available to get rid of food poisoning.
Using lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
Lemon juice and apple cider vinegar works wonders in preventing food poisoning to a large extent. Mix a tablespoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to cup of hot water and drink it before meals to avoid acid indigestion.
Using Ginger
Ginger is a wonderful home remedy for food poisoning. Make a paste of ginger and buttermilk and take this 2-3 times a day. Alternately, take the ginger extract and mix it with lemon juice for avoiding vomiting and nausea etc.
Take about 2-3 table spoons of ginger and lemon extract and mix a small amount of black pepper with it. Take this 3-4 times daily to get quick relief from food poisoning. Ginger tea can also be taken by the patients suffering from food poisoning.
Using herbal teas
Herbal teas made from mint, chamomile, raspberry and blackberry are also useful against food poisoning. Herbal teas soothe the stomach and offer quick relief from food poisoning.
Using papaya
Raw papaya is a very useful treatment for food poisoning. Take a raw papaya and slice it into small cubes. Add these cubes to 1-2 glasses of water and boil this mixture for 15-20 minutes. After boiling, strain the mixture and drink the juice obtained from the process. Repeat this for 2-3 times every day to get quick relief from food poisoning.
Using Basil leaves
Basil leaves can also be used as a home remedy for food poisoning. Mix half cup of fresh curd with 3 tablespoons of basil leaves extracts. Add to it a pinch of black pepper and black salt. Take this mixture 3-4 times every day. It will soothe the stomach and give it relief from pain. It also provides relief from vomiting, weakness and body pain.
Using cumin seeds
Cumin seeds mixed with fenugreek can be used as an important home remedy for food poisoning. Take 10-20 seeds each of cumin and fenugreek and make a powder from it. Mix it with a glass of water and drink. It will provide relief from the symptoms of food poisoning. The powder can also be mixed with half a cup of fresh curd.
Using garlic and soya oils
Mix 3-4 drops of garlic oil with equal amount of soya oil and use it as a lotion. Rub onto the stomach after taking food. It will relieve the stomach and give it much needed impetus to fight with the toxins or other foreign substances.
Taking proper rest
Taking proper rest is another way to get recovered from food poisoning. The symptoms of food poisoning arise when the body fights back with the toxins or foreign substances. Thus, when rest is taken the body gets all the energy to fight back fully against the toxins. This helps the body to get recovered sooner than usual. While taking rest one may take bland liquids such as water, diluted orange juice or light tea.
There might be various reasons associated with food poisoning and it is always better to learn early the reasons of the poisoning. It helps in the treatment of the condition. However, if the home remedies go futile or fail to produce enough effect the patients must consult the doctor immediately.
