A person suffers from anemia mainly due to nutritional deficiency. A person is anemic when his red blood cell count is too low due to which enough oxygen is not carried to all parts of the body. Though anemia in itself is not a disease, it can however be a symptom of other diseases. So recognizing its symptom at an early stage will be a real benefit. Blood loss and lesser production of red blood cells can be the cause of anemia.
While iron deficiency is the main cause of anemia, but lack of vitamin B12, folic acid and copper in our system can also be the cause of anemia. Lack of energy, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, and pale look are some of the symptoms of anemia. If a pregnant lady suffers from anemia, she can develop complication at the time of delivery. So getting proper nutrition by eating a diet rich in dairy products, cereal, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, dry beans and nuts are very important.
An anemic person must eat a lot of iron rich food like green leafy vegetables, liver, beet, brown rice, oyster, lentils, dried fruits, bran flake, whole grain breads, pasta and raisins. Intake of tea and coffee should be avoided as they decrease iron absorption. To increase the amounts of iron in your food, cook them in an iron pot. It is a proven traditional method. Fresh citrus fruit and vegetables like capsicum and tomatoes are a natural source of vitamin C and can treat well in vitamin deficient anemia. Apples have high iron content. So eat apples regularly.
Some herbs can treat iron deficiency very well. Some effective herbs are:
• Fenugreek is rich in iron content. Soak fenugreek seeds in 2 teaspoon of water overnight. Give it a boil and drink. It can cure anemia in girls also due to menstruation.
• Celery taken with carrot juice can be an effective way to overcome iron deficiency.
• Onion is rich in iron content and helps to treat anemia.
Besides these, cold water bath two times a day is also beneficial for anemic patients.
