English Ivy
It is a native plant of America and west Asia. It is beautiful green foliage characterized by a climbing nature. These plants, when kept aligned on to the roofs and walls, can grow as long as ten to 12 feet! Thus, while you plan to keep this plant as your indoor decoration, take special care on its pruning, which is ideal if done before the arrival of summer.
The beauty of the plant lies in the individually small structure of the leaves, that are as much as fifty to a hundred centimeters long, clustered together beautifully like a mesh. Some of the varieties are also flower bearing, but they are only the ones that are kept under the sun. These flowers are smaller in diameter and yellowish green in color. The flowering season starts in those varieties from early summer to spring.
When you plan to keep English Ivy in you room, pot it in a deep container that has a broad base. Provide a support in the form of a stick covered with straw or a beautiful cane stick, so that the plant could grow encircling that.
Watering of the plant should be made preferably every alternate day. Best is detecting soil before watering. Try to touch the soil and find out if it is moist. If you feel slight damp soil, water it. Never let it dry too much or water so often that the roots rot.
A good thing to know is that this plant does not require much of a care. Put it in a window that allows free sunlight, this will be enough for the plant. An interesting thing to know is that this plant was used since a long time for treating some skin disorders as well.
Snake Plant
Though the name may appear to be quite poisonous, but Snake plant is easy to maintain plant that also purifies the air. The sword-like greenish leaves are thick and unsmooth to touch with length as much as 90 cms of length and 5 to 6 cms width. They point upwards with a pointed end.
The name is such because the shape of the leaves resemble the hood and the body of a snake to a great extent. It is also known as “mother in laws tongue” due to the shape.
Identified as one of the very hardy and easily maintained plant, it is available in certain varieties of colors. Some of them are dark green in color with a yet darker shade of stokes on the leaves. Another variety is marked by a yellow border with green base.
The watering requirement of the plant is moderate to low. In summers water is to be given to the plant only when the soil is bone try. During winters water requirement is reduced even more, and restricted to an interval of 7 to 10 days. Over watering is harmful to the plant as it tends to rot the roots. Even if the soil appears very dry, still then that is the ideal watering interval.
It does not require too much of maintenance and thrives well in any conditions. While kept indoors, it is healthy and fine. Even when kept outdoors it survives.
The plant is, by nature pot bound, so once you decide to pot t, select a beautiful container that has a good drainage system and can be a piece of decoration in your room. Repotting is something it hates. Snake plant is identified as air purifier because it adsorbs the nitrates and oxides of nitrogen from the air.
Boston Ferns
Some of the most common plants, that we have seen growing in the gardens and lawns around us are Boston fern. Many a times, we do not even think of turning to look at them when we cross them while walking through the garden. But most surprisingly, this is one of the most ideal air purifying plant. Moreover, it is quite beautiful to look even.
The best condition where Boston fern thrives is a humid and moist weather. Frequent watering is also not a problem for this plant even. Except the winter months, moderate to heavy watering is needed for this plant throughout the year. You can identify lack of water if the plant turns yellow gradually.
The sun light requirement of this plant is that if kept indoors, it must be kept in such a place which allows entry of sunlight. On the other hand, those who prefer to keep it outdoors must ensure that it is grown under the shade of other plants. It cannot stand strong and direct sunlight. If you see the leaves withering then you must realize it is not getting adequate sunlight.
