Menorrhagia is the medical term for heavy bleeding experienced during menstruation. The condition is characterized by loss of huge amounts of blood accompanied with pain in the abdominal and pelvic areas.
The heavy bleeding can last for days making the woman weak and anemic. In some cases the loss of blood might not be heavy but the menstrual cycle gets stretched beyond the normal five days.
Many women experience Menorrhagia at one time or the other. However, some women suffer from during most of their menstrual cycle. In such cases the disease become serious and can also be life threatening of left untreated.
Menorrhagia can be easily treated at home with natural and herbal remedies. However, it is best to consult a doctor if someone suffers from it frequently. The doctor will want to do tests to know the reason for Menorrhagia and treat it accordingly.
Menorrhagia results in anemia in most women. The reason is simple; heavy blood loss means loss of iron from the body since one of the major components of blood is iron. If you find yourself bleeding heavier than usual then simply take iron supplements in your diet to prevent occurrence of anemia. In some women Menorrhagia is also a result of iron deficiency.
Hence it becomes important for all women to take an iron-rich diet which includes lots of green vegetables and yellow fruits. Broccoli, spinach, mangoes, bananas and papaya are rich source of iron and should be taken in daily diet. However, while eating an iron-rich diet do not neglect other nutrients, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and proteins. The idea is to eat a well-balanced diet every day.
Herbal Remedies for Menorrhagia
Cinnamon is an excellent herb and is often used in the treatment of various disorders related to menstruation in women. A woman experiencing excessive loss of blood during her menstrual cycle can take a teaspoon of cinnamon powder thrice a day before meals. It can also be added to boiling water to prepare cinnamon herbal tea. Drink at least three cups of cinnamon tea for two days to decrease loss of blood.
Parsley is a popular herb used in cooking non-vegetarian dishes. The herb adds aroma and flavor to the meat. Drink 75ml of parsley juice three times a day on the day you begin your periods. Prepare fresh juice by boiling 100 gm of parsley leaves in 3 ounces distilled water. Strain the mixture and allow it to cool before drinking. Drink the juice for the first three days of your menstrual cycle.
Tea made from coriander seeds are also a good remedy for treating Menorrhagia. Boil ten grams of the seed in 600ml water. Boil until the quantity of water becomes almost half. Strain the tea and allow it to cool before drinking. Take two cups of coriander seeds tea every day for the first five days of your periods. Do not add milk to the tea though you can add a teaspoon of honey if the taste is not to your liking.
Ginger is also excellent for curing Menorrhagia at home. It not only controls flow of blood but also helps relieve the accompanying pain in abdomen and pelvis. You can eat ginger raw or prepare ginger tea. To prepare ginger tea simply grate a medium sized ginger which has been peeled off its skin. Put the ginger in three ounces boiling water. Boil for 5-7 minutes. Remove from flame and strain. Allow the tea to cool down to warm temperature before drinking it. Drinking warm ginger tea will help abate the menstrual pain. You can also add sugar and milk to the tea and have six cups daily.
Unripe papaya is also beneficial for treating heavy bleeding during menstrual cycles. Papaya is known for helping the muscles of the uterus contract easily. This is one reason pregnant woman are asked to stay away from papaya during the first trimester of pregnancy. Eating papaya during this time can trigger muscle contractions in the uterus leading to miscarriage. However, eating raw papaya during Menorrhagia is an excellent remedy. Comfortable contractions of uterine muscles allows for proper flow of blood. Sesame seeds when taken with water also help in treating Menorrhagia.
Grind 30 grams of sesame seeds to powder. Mix six grams of the powdered sesame seeds in about 60 ml of hot water. Have this water two times a day during the entire course of your menstrual cycle. Sesame water is also good for relieving spasmodic pain that comes with menstruation. It can also be taken two days before you begin your periods.
Marigold is another useful herb for treating Menorrhagia. Take three marigold flowers and put them in 500ml boiling water. Let the water boil for 10 minutes. Remove from flame and cover the utensil with a lid. Let the infusion cool down before straining it. Use this water to prepare tea for yourself. If you do not wish to drink tea then simply take one tablespoon of the infusion once in the morning and once at night before going to bed. The infusion should be taken during the first three days of the cycle.
Tea prepared from rosehip herb is also effective in treatment of Menorrhagia. Rosehip herb is available in most health stores. Drink two cups of rosehip herbal tea daily for as many number of days as your menstrual cycle continues. The tea is rich in Vitamin C which helps boost the immune system.
A healthy immune system has healthy blood vessels. You can even begin the rosehip herbal tea treatment a week before you begin your periods. The treatment can be continued even after the periods stop. This will not only regulate the flow of blood but also make periods regular and less painful.
Prepare infusion of Indian Gooseberry to prevent heavy loss of blood. In about 400ml of water boil two medium sized Indian Gooseberries. Let the water boil for 10 minutes and then remove from flame. Allow the water to cool down before straining. You can drink this water in place of regular water. Prepare the water a day before you begin your cycle and store in the refrigerator.
