By on December 29, 2009

All of us are aware of the fact that an average adult needs a minimum of eight hours of sleep each night. However, many people who suffer from sleep disorders fail to get this minimum amount of sleep, resulting in overall degradation of health. Two of the most common sleep disorders include Periodic Limb Movement Disorder and Restless Leg Syndrome. These diseases lead to involuntary movement of legs and arms while sleeping, thus interfering with a good night sleep.

Sleep disorders can be broadly classified into these disorders, namely, sleep disturbance, inadequate sleep and excessive sleep. Therefore, to find the right cure for your sleep disorders, first of all you need to determine the kind of sleep disorder you are suffering from. Some of the symptoms of sleep disorders can be quite challenging and dangerous such as dozing off while sleeping and slow reactions along with emotional outbursts.

The most common kind of sleep disorder, that is insomnia, exerts an immense amount of effect on one’s memory, judgment, reaction-time, hand and eye coordination, and overall well-being. Another kind of sleep disorder called sleep apnea is caused due to partial blockage of the airway. The treatment of this disorder includes the use of different medical devices to force air inside the mouth while sleeping or using a dental device to keep the position of the mouth in such a way that one can breathe properly.

To treat the problem of sleep disorder, many doctors prescribe sleeping medications for getting temporary relief. For long term treatment, it is better to try natural remedies for getting rid of this sleeplessness and other symptoms associated with it. Avoid the habit of taking a glass or alcohol, liquor or wine before going to sleep as it can act as a depressant of the nervous system in the long run. Also, our body produces melatonin for getting a good night sleep. This production can be hindered by presence of any light in the bedroom include bright LED lights on clocks as well as night lights. Any kind of bright light in a dark room can hinder the production of melatonin. You can also shut down your drapes or use black drapes to keep the light away.

Go for natural methods such as meditation or relaxation exercises to clear your mind before sleep. This will help you to reduce stress and in turn, help with insomnia as well. Try other natural approaches as well and avoid sleeping pills and drugs as much as possible.
