Flea Remedies for Puppies
Flea attack is for dogs and especially for new born puppies. Flea attack can leave your pet anemic that leads to lowering of oxygen level in the blood which can even cause death in severe cases.
It is not safe to expose the new born and older pups to the harmful chemicals found in flea medications. That does not mean that flea in puppies cannot be treated. There are methods of ridding the puppies from flea attack without resorting to use of harsh chemicals.
When medicating your pup for fleas take care to sanitize your home, garden and yard as well to completely get rid of the nuisance.
You will have to bathe the pup regularly to get rid of the fleas. Pour warm water in your pet’s tub and put the pup inside. Once the pup is well soaked with water take him out and rub a puppy shampoo or a good but gentle dish washing liquid soap all over his body. Lather well. Rinse off the shampoo using warm water again. Now begins the real treatment.
Hand pick the fleas from the pup’s body. Once you have picked out enough fleas put the pup in water again. The fleas will drown or will try to find a secure place at a higher level on the body. This will make them crawl towards the head. It will be easier to pick them out now that they all will be together.
There are flea combs available in all pet stores. Using this comb you can brush the fleas from the pup’s body. Remember to kill all the fleas that you find or they will find a way to get back into your pup’s hair. Combing for fleas is not possible for breeds that have long hair but it can be done on the young pups. It is one of the best methods of getting rid of fleas although it is time consuming.
Many pet stores have flea collars available but these again contain chemicals that can be harmful for the young pup. A good alternative is the herbal flea collar. It has no harsh chemicals. The collar is treated to herbs and aromatic oils that are irritating to the fleas. The herbal flea collar can be safely used on puppies. The collar will give best results when combined with other flea treatments like bath or flea combing.
