Mange in dogs is the medical term for a skin disorder caused by mites. Mange is also referred to as canine scabies. Let us see some common symptoms of mange in dogs.
The first symptom of mange is excessive itching. Itching and scratching are normal for most pets but if your dog scratches hard and frequently, which causes red sores or bumps on his skin then it could probably be an indication that your dog has been infected with mites and is suffering from mange. Extreme itching can also cause inflammation in the dog’s skin.
Hair loss is the most common symptom of mange in dogs. Loss of hair usually occurs in patches. This takes place on the surface area of skin where mites attack and burrow themselves. Hair starts thinning at such places resulting in complete hair loss at these spots. These hairless areas are usually red in color.
Blisters and sores are the other symptoms of dog mange. These are common symptoms of most skin disorders. But if blisters and sores appear on your dog’s skin, which is also accompanied with severe inflammation, open wounds and blood, then you must realize that your dog’s mange problem has become worse. You must immediately take your dog to the veterinarian for its treatment.
Thickened, dry and crusty skin is another symptom of dog mange. Hair loss in your dog can be caused due to several diseases. But if the exposed part resulting from hair loss becomes dry and wrinkled, you can say that your dog has been infected with parasites and is suffering from mange.
Weight loss and loss of appetite are also the symptoms of mange in dogs. Mange symptoms can also include brown marks on the nose and the area around the nose, formation of crust from the discharge of the ear, and strong and foul body odor.Mange is a serious disorder of skin and needs proper treatment.
