Broadly, fish tank filters are of two types, namely, internal filters and external filters. Further, internal tank filters are also of two types – Under Gravel Filter (UGF) and Sump Tank Filter (STF). UGF’s are installed below the gravel or substrate present on the surface of the tank. They contain plastic grates with tubes rising from them and a bubbler inserted inside. They suck the water through gravel and then send it back through the tubes. The gravel removes many kinds of debris from the water as it acts as a filter. On the other hand, STF’s are more popular with marine fish tanks. They contain an internal tube meant for removing water from the tank and passing it down to the sump area. This water is then filtered to remove bacteria and debris, and pumped back into the tank.
The other kind is external filter which filters and cleans the outer part of the tank and separates clean and unfiltered water. Two hoses connect this filter with the tank and water is constantly pumped in and out to provide fresh water constantly. They are extremely useful but quite expensive as well.
Purchasing the right kind of filter for your fish tank is the best possible way to keep the tank clean with much maintenance. Getting the wrong filter would require you to do a lot of cleaning yourself. Therefore, it is important to carry out proper researcher before buying a filter for your fish tank. Follow the above given advice to make the right decision when it comes to buying the fish tank filter.
