Computer Tips For Beginners
If you are not computer savvy, and just a beginner, you may go through certain problems in the beginning. Novice computer users face various problems including slow start up, frequent starting and restarting, loosing data etc. To run their computers well and work efficiently here are few tips for beginners. Proper maintenance allows your computer system to perform efficiently. Hard drive is extremely important or the work horse of your computer. Regular maintenance will ensure that your computer works well.
Regular tune-up is required to get the best performance from your computer. If your computer is running slow, the cause behind it may be your hard drive being full. Hard drive stores all the files we use or download. So it could be full of unnecessary files.
Run Disk Cleanup
Disk clean up can automatically identify the files which are absolutely unnecessary for your computer and accumulate on your hard disk from time to time when you download or use Internet Explorer, software installation, recycle bin, and temporary internet files which cover up the space of your hard drive.
To perform disk clean up, click start > programs >Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. After putting a check mark in temporary internet files, temporary files and Recycle bin, click ok. Run at least once a week or more depending on how frequently you use your computer.
Check Space on Your Hard Disk
Open My computer and then right click the particular drive you want to check. Then select properties and then free space. It will show the available space.
Run Scan Disk
Scan disk can improve the performance of your computer by checking and repairing error on your hard drive. This scanning process might take 3/4 hours depending on the storage of files. During scanning period computer does not perform well. So it is better to perform this action when your computer is free. If you are using Windows XP, instead of scan disk utility you have to perform ‘error checking’. To perform this action go to start button > My Computer > local disk (right click) > properties> error checking> check now. Now check disk options will appear. Put check mark and click start. It will ask you to restart your computer or perform later. Restart and scanning process will begin. Carry out this process at least once in a month.
Run Disk Defragmenter
This is another very necessary computer maintenance program to put your files back in order on your hard drive. Fragmentation occurs when we delete or store files. De-fragment your hard drive once in a month. This action can take long hours, so use this tool when you are not working on your computer. Close all the programs while performing defragmentation.
