What is charley horse?

Are you a sports personality or just a healthy individual who likes to keep fit, then do not let this nightmare that has haunted great athletes bring you down. Have you ever experienced a painful twitch on your thigh muscles during your training so suddenly that you collapsed on the track and could not move your leg? Then this is the reason why charley horse in the thigh has to be brought to the attention of any character that wants to keep fit without fear of dropping out due to unforeseeable circumstances that my even make a cripple out of an athlete. Charley horse is a painful spasm of the thigh muscles that commonly results into a muscular hematoma. This term could also describe painful cramps in the leg following strenuous exercise it’s also common during pregnancy.

Causes of charley horse in calf muscle

Charley horse in the calf muscles may be caused by: protracted muscle contractions following a long exercise stint beyond our extremes, sitting or lying in uncomfortable positions for several hours, dehydration due to over respiration long exposures to heat, low calcium sodium or potassium levels in the system, hormonal imbalance, side effects of medications, or other complex diseases such as neuropathy or any other activities that may result into accumulation of lactic acid in the muscle fiber.

Do’s and Don’ts in the Treatment and Control of Charley Horse in the Calf Muscles

To avoid instances or occurrences of charley horse always stretch for few minutes after strenuous exercise to help the muscles recover. When charley horse strikes; keep your feet in a bent position closer to your butt, run a soft touch maneuver with your hands to locate the sore spot then gently massage the spot to ease the flow of blood to the region. Use ice alternating with low temperature moist heat to relax the muscle further.

Eat sodium and potassium reach foods such as: bananas and oranges drink a glass of milk for calcium and water to replace water lost and flush out toxins. Use some anti-inflammatory for the pain, vitamins-B-complex to replenish the neurons and tonic water which is a good source of quinine.

Take a lot of drinks but avoid caffeine and alcohol. Avoid heat and do not stretch the muscles for this will strain them further. Do not return to sports activities hastily before substantial improvement for these may increases the probability of further complications and can consequently lead in to a long-term or permanent disability.
