Causes of Eating Disorder
Eating disorder is considered as a psychological state caused by disturbed and abnormal eating behavior resulting in several health complications.
Eating disorder can be an outcome of closely linked biological and psychological factors in addition to social conditions.
Overeating and several other drastic changes in eating habits such as low food intake because of stress or apprehensions on being overweight come under category of eating disorder.
A person having eating disorder develops a tendency for eating either very little amount of food or too much of it. Eating disorders can be associated with anxiety and various other psychological conditions like despondence and substance abuse.
Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa come under the category of eating disorder. Eating disorder can lead to kidney failure besides resulting in heart ailment and even death.
What causes eating disorder?
There can be a number of reasons for eating disorders including biological and psychological factors as well as social circumstances.
Eating disorder can occur in a person having adverse cultural and family circumstances. A person undergoing personality change or suffering emotional setback is also likely to develop eating disorder.
Major life change
Some people find it difficult to adjust themselves with some changing phases in their life such as change of schools or colleges, puberty, sickness or depressions and emotional distress caused by death of their near and dear ones. Such people are most likely to either consume too much of food or eat very less.
Emotional and psychological well being
Eating disorder may occur due to various emotional and psychological reasons. A person having low self esteem, impulsive and whimsical behavior is likely to develop eating disorder. A person facing family disputes or relationship problems can also have eating disorder.
Biological problems
A person with a family history of eating disorder is also likely to develop this condition which is also considered as a genetic problem. Serotonin a chemical which naturally occurs in the brain affects eating habits by regulating and controlling the food intake.
Trauma
Those undergoing physical or sexual abuse once in their life can develop eating disorder. Such people have a tendency of losing weight and avoiding further sexual attention through change in their eating behavior.
