benefits of breastfeedingAn incident took place recently which drew attention of everyone on this subject. A mother was banned for feeding the baby on the public place as this is not healthy for the baby.

This incident proves the fact that there is still a long way to go in order to make our children healthier through breastfeeding. Position the baby’s and mother’s help during breastfeeding. We all know that the first month is not easy for any mother and this subject in theory and practice is absolutely different.

Importance of breastfeeding and practical measures to advance feedings:

Human milk is widely recognized as the ideal source of nutrition for all children. Breast milk promotes the development of the defense system of the baby and to meet the nutritional needs of a newborn up to six months of age, when complementary foods and fluids are usually added to the diet. Breastfeeding should continue supplemental feeding until two years old.

Breastfeeding, in addition to food, immunize and protect against various diseases still has advantages for the mother, the family and society. Human milk is widely recognized as the ideal source of nutrition and help to promote the development of the defense system of the baby.

    Significance of breastfeeding for mother

Women who breastfeed the child have less postpartum bleeding and therefore faces less risk of anemia. In addition to faster recovery of weight before pregnancy, less risk of breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer and fewer bone fractures due to osteoporosis.

Significance of breast feeding for children

Children who are breastfed have fewer allergies in general, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, malnutrition, diabetes mellitus, diarrhoea, Crohn’s disease, leukemia and lymphoma, sudden infant death syndrome, tumor growth, among many others. Moreover, infants also develop better visual acuity, cognitive development, social and neuromotor and intellectual impairment.

Finance for the family and society

Breastfeeding definitely helps the child and saves your money by lowering the medical appointments, medications, laboratory tests and hospitalization of the child.

    When you start breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding should begin within the first hour after delivery if possible. Immediately after birth the baby should be brought to the mother’s breast for a first recognition.

In the first days after birth, the woman produces a small quantity of a yellowish milk called colostrum. Colostrum is rich in nutrients and provides all the calories a baby needs for the first day.

Many women fear that their baby is not getting enough milk immediately after delivery, when only small amounts of colostrum are normally produced. It is normal to produce small quantities of milk at first. With continued frequent breastfeeding, a larger amount of mature milk will be produced within two or three days. Babies normally lose weight during the first days of life and gradually regain this weight.

What is the best position for breastfeeding?

There is no “best” position, the woman should be comfortable for the mother and allow the baby to perform proper latch, sucking easily. The mother may have several preferred positions depending on the size of the baby’s medical condition and location where the mothers will breastfeed.

This will only practice and intimacy between mother and son define and can take days to weeks for ideal adaptation. But it is important to seek professional help to be able to find the right position for you as it may harm an uncomfortable position to get hurt and nipples. The mother may be sitting, lying down or standing up. The baby can sit, lie or even upside down (between the arm and side of the mother’s body). The important thing is that both are comfortable and relaxed. There are four tips from the correct position of the baby:

    - The body and the baby’s head should be aligned so that the child does not need to turn your head to take the breast.

    - The baby’s body should be leaning on the mother (with belly  to belly touch ).

    - The complainer should touch the breast.

    - The child is supported by the mother’s arm, involving the head, neck and upper trunk. In small babies, the mother should also involve the buttocks with his hand.

A good grip is important for the baby can suckle properly, the child must grasp not only the nipple but all or most of the areola (ie the darkest part of the breast). This grip provides the correct formation of a large and long spout that allows for adequate suction. When the handle is not correct, the baby cannot feed well and may get angry, and hurt the nozzle, causing the cracks.

One of the main reasons for early weaning is to nurse the pain can be caused by cracks, engorgement of the breasts and even more serious situations such as mastitis.

    Guidelines for success in breastfeeding

Below are some guidelines for success in breastfeeding, because breastfeeding can and should be pleasurable for both mother and baby. There is only one way to power, is an act of love. Remember that no action should be taken without prior knowledge of doctor.

Keep-exclusive breastfeeding on demand: begin breastfeeding within the first hour after birth. Seek help from health professionals even in the hospital and at home if necessary to get good grip and more comfortable position of the baby.

Find your obstetrician when necessary to clarify their doubts and no sign of pain, so the doctor can guide them early.

Expose your nipples to air and sun for 10 to 15 minutes a day if possible and always before 10am or after 16h. -Apply cold water soaked cotton (not iced) in the range of breastfeeding when the breasts are very full and warm.

Avoid washing nipples-several times daily because excessive washing with soap dries the skin nipple. Spread your own expressed milk to moisturize and lubricate the areola is ideal.

Avoid the use of nipple shields that not only confuse the handle may decrease ventilation. Do not use creams or ointments unless your doctor’s prescription.

    Breastfeeding quieter

To take the baby from the breast, always introduce your little finger into the baby’s mouth for him to pass to suck his finger, dropping the nozzle. Start by breast feeding healthy or less painful. If they are not sore, start with the ending in breast feeding earlier. Try breastfeeding baby in different positions until you discover which is best for you and your baby.

Search-quality sources and read much about it even during pregnancy, see pictures and videos demonstrating the various positions to meet and get right, listen to testimonials from others.
