Baby Acne
This may come as a surprise to a lot of our readers when we tell them that babies are also affected by acne. It is a common belief that acne appears at the time of puberty. This is not at true as there are babies who are born with acne. In some cases this does not show up at the time of birth but are visible when the child is a few weeks old. This form of acne has been termed as baby acne.
The baby acne in most of the cases appears on the cheek but at times it even appears on the chin and the back. They may not look like normal acne. It is more like a rash with a small pimple and is red in appearance. There are times that baby acne appears in the form of a whitehead on the skin of the infant. The acne might become stronger at times when the baby releases more body heat. When it does not release heat it might reduce.
There are mostly three types of acnes that are identified with new born and infants. These include neonatal acne, infantile acne and neonata milia. The neonatal acne is mostly seen at the time of birth of the child. This form of acne resembles a pimple. The infantile acne as the name suggests appear in a child till the age of four years and it looks like a blackhead or pustules. The last type the neonatal milia are the most common form and are found in both infants and new born. They resemble a whitehead.
The baby acne does not stay for long in most of the cases. The cycle is unlike the adult acne. In most of the cases the baby acne goes in about a few weeks. In few cases it stays on the skin for months. There are instances when baby acne stays for more than three months at such time the pediatric should be consulted.
There is no one reason attributed to the occurrence of acne on a baby’s skin. There are some researchers who believe that it happens to infants who get it from their mother if she has acne at the end of her pregnancy. Then there are chances that your child will also have them. There are others who believe that baby acne can also be triggered by medicines at the time when the mother is nursing.
If your child has got a case of baby acne then you would have to keep few things in mind. Try and not put creams and oils to the affected area of your baby’s skin as this may give a rise to the acne. The face should not be scrubbed and repeatedly washed as this may irritate the skin further. Try and keep the infected area of your baby clean. Use a mild soap or a cleanser daily.
